The ostinatum
It’s like an arpeggiator on a synthesiser.
- Viola d’amore: These sympathetic strings add resonance and a unique tonal quality to the instrument. It is known for its warm and haunting sound.
- Viola da gamba: It has a rich, mellow sound and is played vertically, resting between the legs or against the chest.
- Electric violin/viola/cello: Electric versions of traditional string instruments have gained popularity in contemporary music genres.
- Hardanger fiddle: The Hardanger fiddle, or Hardanger violin, is a traditional Norwegian instrument. It has additional sympathetic strings and a carved dragon’s head at the scroll, giving it a distinctive appearance.
- Nyckelharpa: The nyckelharpa is a traditional Swedish instrument with a keyboard-like mechanism that presses tangents against the strings.
- Octobass: The octobass is an extremely large and rare instrument, a variation of the double bass.
- Stroh violin: The Stroh violin produces a distinctive and slightly metallic sound.
